Richard Stidston was born on January 9, 1727, in Modbury, Devon, England, and baptized a month later on February 9. He was the son of Bartholomew Stidston (1699–1755) and Mary Jane Algar (1699–1769). Richard married Joan Nuts on September 22, 1750, in Cornwood, Devon, and together they had a daughter, Elizabeth Stidston, born on December 23, 1749, in Cornwood. He experienced the loss of his father in 1755 and his mother around 1769. Richard spent much of his life in Devon and passed away in 1783 in Newton Ferrers, Devon, at the age of 56.
