William Alfred Stidston & Alice Cole Family

02 Feb 1841 - William Alfred Stidston Jr

 William Alfred Stidston Jr. was born on February 2, 1841, at Lower Hatch Farm in Loddiswell, Kingsbridge, Devon, England. He experienced the loss of his mother, Alice Cole, at the age of 12 and had several half-siblings born throughout his youth. In July 1871, he married Jane Hovenden in Plymouth, Devon, and shortly thereafter emigrated to the United States in 1875. Settling in California, he worked as a farmer and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1881. William and Jane had several children, including Mildred, Archibald, and Norman. After Jane's death in 1883, he remarried in 1889 to Annie Osbourne, with whom he had at least one son, Russell. Over the years, he lived in various parts of Santa Clara County, including Haywards, Los Gatos, and Palo Alto. He was listed as retired by 1900 and remained active in his later years, with occupations noted as agent and retired gentleman. William died on March 1, 1920, at the age of 79, in Palo Alto, California.

April 1863 - Albert Edward Stidston

 Albert Edward Stidston was born in April 1863 in Kingsbridge, Devon, England. The son of William Alfred Stidston and Elizabeth Stidston, he grew up in a farming family and was recorded in the 1881 census as a farmer’s son in Kingston, Devon. He married in April 1896 in Plympton St Mary, Devon, and had three children: Una (born 1897), Arthur Edward (1899–1976), and Eric Treneman (1905–1999), all born in Thurlestone, Devon. Albert lived much of his adult life in Thurlestone, where he worked as a farmer and served as head of household in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. He experienced the deaths of several close family members, including his father in 1883, mother in 1903, and brother Ernest in 1912. He passed away on August 18, 1938, in Devon, England, and was buried in Thurlestone. Probate for his estate was recorded in London in June 1939. 

October 1869 - Edith Caroline Stidston

 Edith Caroline Stidston was born in October 1869 in Kingsbridge, Devon, England, the youngest daughter of William Alfred Stidston and Elizabeth Stidston. She was living in Kingston, Devon, with her family in 1881, listed in the census as a daughter in the household. Following the death of her father in 1883, Edith remained in Devon and married in October 1894 in the Kingsbridge area. She experienced the loss of several close family members over the years, including her mother in 1903, her brother Ernest in 1912, her half-brother William Alfred Jr. in 1920, her sister Alice Marian in 1924, and her brother Albert Edward in 1938. While her birth and family details are well documented, no confirmed record of her death has been found, and it remains unknown. 

1857 - Earnest Samuel Stidston

 Ernest Samuel Stidston was born around 1857 in Kingston, Devon, England, the son of William Alfred and Elizabeth Stidston. He grew up in a farming family and remained in Devon throughout his life. In 1882, he married Sarah Jane Hooppell in West Alvington.  Ernest worked as a farmer and was head of household in Marlborough, Devon, as recorded in the 1891 and 1911 censuses. Ernest also donated quite a lot of money towards Dean Prior Church (430k in today's money), Where he's plague still stands to this day.

1861 - Alice Marian Stidston

 Alice Marian Stidston was born around 1861 in Kingston, Devon, England, to William Alfred and Elizabeth Stidston. She spent her early years in Kingston, living with her family and appearing in the 1861 and 1881 censuses as a daughter in the household. In April 1887, Alice married Peter Owen Hingston in Kingston. The couple was affiliated with the Anglican Church and continued to reside in the area. Throughout her life, Alice remained close to her family, witnessing the deaths of her father in 1883, her mother in 1903, and several siblings in later years. She passed away on April 5, 1924, in Plymouth, Devon, at the age of 63. Probate was granted on May 26, 1924, in Exeter, marking the conclusion of her life in Devon, where she had spent her entire life. 

January 1865 - Kate Stidston

 Kate Stidston was born in January 1865 in Kingsbridge, Devon, England, the daughter of William Alfred and Elizabeth Stidston. She was raised in a large farming family and appears in the 1881 census living in Kingston, Devon, as a daughter in the household. After the death of her father in 1883, Kate married Thomas Henwood Adams in April 1892 in Kingston. The couple was associated with the Anglican Church and remained in the Devon area. She lived through the deaths of many family members, including her mother in 1903, several siblings, and her half-brother William Alfred Jr. in 1920. Despite detailed early records, the date and circumstances of Kate's death remain unknown, and no confirmed record has been located to document her later life or passing.
